Healthy ageing diet reduce blood pressure

Globally, over 1 billion people are living with high blood pressure. In Europe, half of the population above 25 years develope hypertension. An Icelandic study from 2016 reported that a daily intake of 10 ml Balanstri Omega3+, as an ingredient in foods, reduced blood pressure by 7 mmHg compared to the control group. Intake of marine omega-3 (EPA + DHA) was 1.5 gram daily (1). Recommended daily dosage of Balanstri Omega3+ as a dietary supplement is 15-20 ml, equivalent to 2.3-3.0 gram omega-3 (EPA + DHA) daily.
Hypertension is the leading risk factor of preventable deaths worldwide. A scientific review from 2015 concluded that every 10 mm Hg reduction in systolic blood pressure led to a significant 13 % reduction in all-cause cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. Relative risk reduction was proportional to the magnitude of blood pressure reduction achieved, both for high and low mean baseline systolic blood pressure (2). This conclusion was based on data from 123 studies with 613 815 participants.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) already in 2009 approved the use of the health claim:”Daily intake of 3 gram marine omega-3 (EPA + DHA) contribute to normalization of blood pressure and triglycerides” (3). In 2012, EFSA concluded that it was safe to consume up to 5 gram marine omega-3 (EPA + DHA) daily (4).
